Five Tips to Get the Most Out of First Year

Volunteering is a great way to gain experience in your field of interest. It always looks great on a resume and is an excellent way to start a networking base with other communications professionals.
2. Carleton has a lot to offer, take advantage of it.

3. Get to know your profs.
Attending your professor’s office hours and participating in class discussions is a great way to start! They are there to help you with any questions or concerns you may have and are a potential source of recommendation in the future. CUSS will be holding an event called Pints with Profs where you have the opportunity to meet with some of the communications profs in a casual setting and have a conversation. Don’t miss out!
4. Apply for the co-op or study abroad program.
Want to do something unique with your time here in University? Consider studying abroad for a year. It is a great way to gain cultural experience and make friends from around the world. The Co-op program gives you the opportunity to gain relevant experience through a paid co-op job and is an awesome way to network within your field.
5. Get Involved.
Getting involved will provide you with opportunities to gain practical knowledge of the field of communications, meet local professionals and build a network with fellow students. Don’t just go through the motions of being a student, follow these steps and make the most of your time in first year!
