Three Reasons to Get Involved in University

Updated: Apr 27, 2020

Calling all first years! Starting University can be scary, especially if you’re moving to a new place, sharing a room for the first time since you were five, and don’t know anyone. So why not get involved?

I know, *groan* right? I thought so to when I started University almost three years ago. Now going into my fourth year, and many extra-curricular activities later, I can really speak to the value of getting involved and how it made a difference in my personal, academic, and professional life.

Let’s start with the obvious…

1. Build that resume.

Jobs, skills, and grad school- oh my! You might as well hear it from me first, because you will hear it constantly throughout the next four years of your life. Getting involved is a great way to add something to your resume. Whether that be joining a club or society on campus, running for an exec position on a team, or just coming out to an event. Not only will it look great on a resume for jobs and grad school, but it’s also a way to learn more and build your skill set.

2. Make friends.

Cheesy I know, but hey it’s true! Making friends can be hard in University, especially if you’re staying at home or living off campus in your first year, but getting involved is an awesome way to meet people, build a community, and learn how to work with a team. It’s also a super cool way to become more connected to the school and build relationships with faculty and staff.

3. Busier could mean better.

I sound crazy, right? Wrong. One of my hesitations for getting involved in my first year was that I would overwork myself. I was so worried about the transition from High School and how my grades would be affected, that I didn’t even want to think about what it would be like to throw an extra-curricular into the mix. But I decided to give it a try. Surprisingly, I found that after getting involved I was more motivated and organized. My habit of ‘Netflix and Procrastinating’ was slowly dying, as I truly just didn’t have time to watch the newest House of Cards episode.

There are tons of ways to get involved with CUSS. You can come out to our events, register for out Mentorship program, write a Blog for our website, or join our team. We’re currently looking for four fabulous first year representatives to join our team- Apply here!

With all that said, why not come out and meet the CUSS exec team at Expo Carleton on September 5th! We’ll be in the Field House from 12-4pm promoting the society, answering all of your questions, and giving out free swag.
